The dangers of toxic chemicals in cosmetics and other products we slather on and ingest is a common topic of lunchtime convo in L.A., where green beauty and wellness elixirs abound. A search is always on for the next best clean beauty destination. Yet one hush-hush Hollywood hot spot, The Organic Pharmacy, has been quietly attracting the likes of Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, Kim Kardashian, Katy Perry, Natalie Portman, John Travolta and Lily Collins to its unassuming store at 453 N. Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills for a while now.
The London-based company (it counts Madonna and Claudia Schiffer as fans across the pond) opened the doors of its L.A. outpost in 2008, where it offers an array of natural organic skincare products, fragrances, cosmetics, facial and body treatments, herbal remedies and supplements, and even health assessments, based on a galvanic body scan.
Lady Gaga (known to have a green thumb in her Malibu gardens) favors The Organic Pharmacy’s Carrot Butter Cleanser ($82.50) and protects her fair skin from the sun with the company’s natural titanium dioxide and zinc oxide based Cellular Protection Sun Cream ($69). Both Gaga and Paltrow are fans of the natural Self Tan ($69), which creates a healthy glow from a sugar beet derivative—Paltrow sells this and more from the line at goop.com. Earlier this summer, a certain A-list celeb personally ordered 1,000 bottles of Self Tan in one swoop.
In August, a customer visiting Beverly Hills from the Middle East scooped up $15,000 worth of The Organic Pharmacy’s all-natural perfumes (the limited-edition versions are infused with real 24-karat gold, $279 for 100 ml.) as gifts for his family and paid in cash, generously tossing in an extra bottle for each of two sales associates.
On Aug. 5, we spied Lily Collins disappearing into one of the Beverly Hills treatment rooms for a facial; she purportedly reaches for the Rose & Bilberry Toning Gel ($99), Peppermint Facial Wash ($67) and Honey & Jasmine Mask ($74).
Kim Kardashian has mentioned using the Rose Facial Cleansing Gel ($85). Green beauty advocate Jessica Alba has been known to stock up on the brand’s Organic Glam makeup and homeopathic remedies. And Katy Perry and Natalie Portman are devotees of the nontoxic Organic Glam nail polish ($18.90 each), a top seller in Los Angeles.
As of June, The Organic Pharmacy is selling select products at the Hotel Bel-Air Spa, where manicures and pedicures using the Organic Glam lacquer are now available, as is the company’s signature Green Coffee Resculpting Body Treatment ($100 for 60 minutes) and an exclusive Rose Renewal Body Treatment that incorporates lotions and potions from the line.
