Cruelty-Free Is The Way To Be:
Top Cruelty-Free Skincare Brands

Animal rights and cruelty awareness are spreading across the fashion and beauty world in the United States. From banning the use of fur to eliminating animal product-testing, luxury brands are really taking large leaps forward to becoming a cruelty-free culture. The best way, as a consumer, to support these efforts is to purchase products that are cruelty-free. Brands follow consumer trends and if the trends are favoring cruelty-free, you bet they will jump on board and become cruelty-free, too!

If you are ethically conscious and want to support the cruelty-free market, then here is a list of the top three skincare brands that are completely cruelty-free (PETA approved)!

Know Your Acids (and I'm not talking about the 70's)

Know Your Acids

Image result for acids in skincare

It is time to get to know your acids! (If you are thinking about the acid that you may have experimented with in the 1970's... then this is the wrong blog for you). Today, acids are extremely common in skin care products and prove to be effective for improving skin and fighting against aging and other skin ailments. It is so important to know your acids before applying them to your skin. However, it can definitely feel overwhelming to see all of these different acids when shopping for skin care products (I mean really, are we shopping or in a high school chemistry class?) So, here is a simple list of the most common acids that you will find in skin care and a brief description of how the acid is beneficial to your skin. Remember, not all acids are the same!

Hyaluronic Acid: dehydrated skin

Salicylic Acid: cleanses and unclogs pores (most commonly used for acne)

Citric Acid: increases collagen production

Glycolic Acid: peels and exfoliates skin - improves appearance of wrinkles, dark spots, and scars (commonly found in chemical peels)

Lactic Acid: softens and improves skin's texture

L-ascorbic Acid: reduces dark spots and hyperpigmentation

Retinoic Acid: reduces dullness and clears acne

Kojic Acid: brightens skin

Ferulic Acid: reduces signs of aging

Mandelic Acid: gently exfoliates

Azelaic Acid: reduces redness, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and acne

Beauty Hacks for the Gym-Goers

Related image
Getting to the gym is hard enough, let alone having to worry about what you will look like after your workout or what the workout is going to do to your skin!

Put those worries away because we have the perfect beauty hacks for all those amazing gym-goers out there.

Instead of worrying about your skin, enjoy your workout and be proud of yourself for making it to the gym!

1. Always wash your face.

Have you ever forgotten to wash your face after a run and allowed the sweat to dry? Notice how hours later, if you go to wipe your cheek, you’ll see how perspiration cakes onto your skin. This can cause breakouts and irritation. That’s why beauty writer and content creator Matt Woodcox says it’s important to wash your face ASAP post-workout, even when you’re in a rush.
Because doing your entire face-cleansing regimen isn’t always possible at the gym, he carries wipes in his gym bag to ensure he never has to skip this all-too-important step. “I like to use the wipe first, then go in with the liquid on a cotton round just to make sure I get as much of the sweat off my face as possible before I am able to wash my face. The reason I find this effective is because it’s almost like a mini post-workout double cleanse,” he explains.

2. Use a toner to get rid of redness.

When you grin-and-bear-it through a workout, your face becomes living proof of your effort. In other words, your face turns mighty red. This can be annoying when you’re trying to put on makeup and head into the office. Luckily, beauty influencer Jeni Steinkopf has a solution. While her face is red and hot, she likes spraying a hydrating and cooling toner on her skin to calm it down.
“Something as simple as a water spray feels amazingly refreshing after a good workout,” she says. “After cleansing, I will mist it all over my face a couple of times because it feels so good. The grape water is nourishing and moisturizing. Since it’s only one ingredient, it’s suitable for even sensitive skin.”

3. Prepare your hair before working out.

Though plenty of people have strategies for fixing their hair after a killer spin class, hair expert and entrepreneur Crystal Frehner says it’s more important to game-plan before you head into the studio. To prepare for your workout—and keep your hair crisp afterward—she recommends using a texturizing spray and putting your hair in a braid. Not only does this save time, since you don’t have time to wash your hair after, but it can also be, well, super-pretty, depending on your hair type.
“The texturizing spray will give your hair volume and work with the sweat to set your hair in the braid, resulting in loose, messy waves, which is super on-trend and stylish,” she explains. For best results, consider adding a Dry Texturizing Spray to your gym bag to try it yourself.

4. Use oil drops to maintain that post-gym glow.

You know what we’re talking about: that post-workout glow. Your skin is flushed but it’s radiant, with a dewy complexion and subtle shine. To keep this natural rosy glow throughout the day, makeup artist and podcast host Cassandra McClure suggests using a glow potion before you head out of the gym.
“We need to keep hydrated when we work out. Our skin needs the same hydration, and a few drops on skin not only hydrates, it exfoliates and won’t clog my pores,” she raves.

5. Use baby wipes for cleaning on the go.

By “baby,” we actually do mean for babies. At least, that’s makeup artist Jules Annen’s solution to wipe away sweat in a hurry. If you don’t have time to shower right away and need to be somewhere in about 20 minutes, Mustela Stelatopia Wipes can help get rid of sweat and debris without drying your skin. “Because these are designed for babies, they are extra absorbent, extra nourishing and great for sensitive skin,” she explains.

Umm... Did You Say Godiva Chocolate Lip Scrub?!

This indulgent Godiva Chocolate Lip Scrub is not only delicious, it is an excellent exfoliant and hydrator; giving your lips that nourished, kissable look -- and just in time for Valentine's Day 😉

Use this Dark Chocolate Coconut Lip Scrub recipe to keep lips soft and smooth. It's the perfect lip scrub for dry lips! Homemade lip scrub never tasted so good.

6 Tablespoons granulated sugar
4 Tablespoons coconut oil
1 square Godiva dark chocolate with sea salt- grated
1 teaspoon Hershey’s dark cocoa
1/2 teaspoon coconut extract or flavoring
Optional: 2 drops Vitamin E oil
*This coconut oil sugar scrub recipe will make enough lip scrub to fill two small lip balm containers -- perfect for keeping one for yourself and giving one to a friend.
1. In a small mixing bowl, add the sugar and coconut oil. Stir to blend well.
2. Add the grated chocolate and cocoa powder. Stir again to incorporate.
3. Add the coconut extract and Vitamin E oil (optional). Mix well to blend the coconut flavor throughout the scrub.
4. Transfer to an airtight container(s) and store up to three months.

Wet your lips with warm water and generously apply the lip scrub to your lips. Then, massage in a circular motion to allow the sugar granules to gently exfoliate any dry or dead skin. This also allows the coconut oil to deeply moisturize your lips. Rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel. Lastly, apply your favorite lip balm moisturizer.

Naturally Nourishing: DIY Skin Care

Did you think that honey and sugar were just sweeteners, and that oatmeal was simply an ingredient for a healthy meal? Well, think again! These products are not only good to eat, but they are good for your skin too. Below is a list of the best DIY skin care products that will allow you to not only clean out your kitchen cupboard, but also naturally nourish and improve your skin.

Oatmeal for Cleanser:
Grind a tablespoon each of oats and sunflower seeds in a blender. Combine the mixture with two tablespoons of yogurt and one tablespoon of warm honey. Gently scrub it onto your face, neck, or chest, and leave on for three minutes before rinsing off with warm water.

Sugar for Glowing Skin:
Just mix one part olive or coconut oil with two parts sugar, adding a few drops of yummy-smelling essential oil if you’d like. You can make a more therapeutic sugar scrub by adding ground oats and honey for additional hydration and calming.

Green Tea Mist for Peely, Red Skin:
Steep two bags of green tea in half a cup of boiling water for 15 minutes. Take the tea bags out and mix in half a cup of rose water. Pour in a spray bottle to apply, and refrigerate the leftovers in a sealed jar.

Milk for Irritated Skin:
Soak a gauze or washcloth with milk, then wring it out and lay it on the problem area to calm down your irritation.

Egg Whites for Clean Pores:
Blend an egg white and a tablespoon of yogurt with half an avocado. Leave the mixture on for ten minutes, then rinse off.

Yogurt for Dry Skin:
Mix together two tablespoons of powdered milk, ¼ cup of yogurt, and ½ teaspoon of honey. Leave the mixture on your face, neck, or chest for 15 minutes, then rinse off with room-temperature water.

Honey for Acne:
Mix nutmeg with honey and milk. Apply it on your face. After 30 minutes, rinse off with cold water and pat dry.

Tumeric for Oily Skin:
Mix gram flour with yogurt and tumeric to make a smooth paste. Now apply this paste on your face and neck for 30 minutes.

Aloe Vera for Wrinkles:
Mix pure aloe vera gel, honey, and coconut oil. Apply the mixture and leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash it off with lukewarm water.

Banana for Dry Skin:
Mash one banana and add a little honey. Apply the mask evenly on your face and leave it on for 30 minutes.

Potato for Pigmentation:
Grate a raw potato finely and then add powdered oats and honey. Mix well and apply for 30 minutes.
